You don’t need to be Irish to celebrate the festivities on St. Patrick’s Day. The holiday brings a welcome splash of green to a snowy landscape, and is synonymous with green beer, wild parties, and gathering with friends and strangers from morning ‘til night.

But for some, the revelry is literally short-lived. Over the past five years, more than 275 Americans have lost their lives as a result from drunk driving accidents on St. Patrick’s Day—or about 55 people over the course of this single 24-hour period each year.

Three Tips to Prevent a Drunk Driving Crash on St. Patrick’s Day

Whether March 17 is a celebration of your heritage or just another Tuesday, here are a few ways all people can stay safe from a drunk driving accident:

  • Watch where you walk! Many drunk driving accidents happen when drivers strike pedestrians—especially on days where crowds gather on streets for pub crawls. If you are walking to your destination, always wait for the proper traffic signals—and even then, look both ways.
  • Take public transportation. If you choose to drink, there are much easier (and faster) ways to get around town. Some cities offer shuttles on St. Patrick’s Day, while buses and cabs can be had for just a few dollars. Buses are better equipped to deal with the crowds and traffic, but any form of public transportation is warmer than walking in winter temperatures.
  • Host a party. Extra police cars are always sent out to patrol the streets on St. Patrick’s Day, increasing the odds of catching you or your friends on the road after drinking. You can guarantee your safety—and the safety of your friends—by hosting a themed party at your house where your friends can drink responsibly. You won’t be paying inflated prices for beer, and you can offer a place for your not-so-sober friends to crash.

If you have been arrested on DUI charges on St. Patrick’s Day, we can help. Our attorneys know the legal statutes and proof necessary to make charges stick, and may be able to get your case dismissed.
