You may have experienced a traumatic event and feel anxious as a result. Perhaps you heard about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and you are concerned that you may be suffering from it. Be assured, not all anxious feelings following a trauma necessarily mean you are suffering from PTSD. Anxiety on its own is not the same psychiatric disorder as PTSD. If you are suffering from PTSD in South Dakota, you should seek medical attention for a full evaluation.

PTSD is diagnosed through a psychological evaluation in which your doctor will ask you to describe the event and your symptoms in great detail. To be diagnosed with PTSD you must meet the following criteria:

  • The event you witnessed involved death or serious injury, or the threat of death or serious injury
  • The event caused intense fear, horror, or hopelessness
  • You re-live the event through flashbacks, images, or dreams
  • You avoid situations reminding you of the event
  • You feel emotionally numb
  • You are on constant alert for danger
  • You cannot sleep
  • You cannot concentrate
  • You are under such distress that you cannot perform your daily functions

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder could be a life-threatening disorder. Seek medical attention if you believe you are suffering from PTSD. If you believe a motor vehicle crash caused your PTSD, please contact a compassionate and experienced attorney to see if you might qualify for compensation for your emotional injuries.

After meeting with a doctor, call Zimmer, Duncan & Cole, LLP, to speak with a South Dakota personal injury attorney about your situation.  Our experienced attorneys in Sioux Falls and Parker are here to assist you.
