Any vehicle accident can be traumatic. However, being hit by a ten thousand pound truck can be especially terrifying and result in catastrophic injuries or death. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 220,000 collisions involving a truck and passenger vehicle occur yearly. Usually, it’s not the truck driver who is killed in these accidents; rather, four out of five times, it’s the driver of the vehicle or the passengers who die.

Five Tips to Avoiding Accidents With Trucks

Many accidents with trucks are caused by factors that a vehicle driver can’t control. A truck driver may be distracted, speeding, or fatigued, and these can often lead to an accident. However, there are ways you can help avoid crashing with a truck:

  • Pass on the left. When passing a truck, you should always pass on the truck’s left because its blind spot is much larger on its right side. Wait until you can see the truck’s headlights in your rearview mirror before moving back into the right-side lane.
  • Do not squeeze in front of a truck. When a truck is making a turn, do not speed up to pass it or try to squeeze in front of it. Trucks swing out when they are turning, and you could be clipped by the truck if you try to get in front of it.
  • Do not cut off a truck. When changing lanes or merging, be careful not to cut off the truck. A truck takes longer than other vehicles to stop or slow down.
  • Do not get between two trucks. Never travel behind one truck and in front of another—sandwiched front to back between them. If the truck in front of you brakes or slows down quickly, the one behind you may not have sufficient time to react, and you could be crushed between them.
  • Slow down when a truck is passing. You should slow down when a truck is passing because water spray or dirt can reduce your visibility.

Even if you follow these safety measures, a truck driver may not be as careful and could cause an accident.
