The winter of 2010-2011 has been cold and snowy for South Dakota, as usual. However, the number of snowplow accidents has been unusually high.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation has reported 18 accidents between snowplows and other drivers since mid-November, already more than the previous three winters combined.
"We're only traveling about 25 miles an hour so people catch up to us real quick and they don't realize how slow we're actually going," explained snowplow driver Steve Schneider.
Drivers can reduce their chances of an accident with a snowplow by driving slowly in bad conditions and never crowding behind a snowplow. Give snowplows plenty of space, and don't try to pass on narrow roads.
"Once in a while, mother nature, you just can't control her, so we do what we can to make the roads safe for everybody," Schneider said.
