Another South Dakota Highway Trooper was hit and injured on Interstate 29 in snowy conditions, this time early in the morning on February 16, 2011.
The crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m., near the 12th street exit in Sioux Falls. Trooper Shannon Orth was not seriously injured in the crash.
This was the twelfth such incident so far this winter, and another has happened since. Police are warning people to drive carefully when they see flashing lights.
"We are very concerned about it, it's an unusual number, it's basically twice as many as we would otherwise expect," Major Randy Hartley said.
"I think everyone of them could have been avoided. In every case it was someone over driving the conditions or some action caused by the other driver that did it," Hartley said.
"When you see a vehicle that's a patrol car or tow truck pulled over the side of the road that's displaying amber cautionary lights there's a reason for that," Hartley said.
