A Mitchell man was killed after colliding with a train at a railroad crossing about four miles west of Brookings on US Highway 14. The crash occurred around 4:50 a.m. on July 16, 2011.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says that 25-year-old Catlin James Hemmah was driving his 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he struck a Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad Train at a crossing. His vehicle then caught fire.

Authorities say the crossing's flashing red lights were working, but heavy fog may have reduced visibility and contributed to the fatal accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
