The Veteran’s Administration’s Black Hills Health System operates a 12-van transportation network to help disabled veterans travel to healthcare facilities in Hot Springs and Fort Meade. One of these vans was recently involved in a fatal crash.
The accident occurred Interstate 90 near Rapid City on Tuesday, May 7, at about 3:35 p.m. Volunteer driver, Shawn Henry Speirs, 33, of Hill City, was behind the wheel of the 2007 Ford Econoline van that was taking veterans from Rapid City to Black Hawk. Speirs was heading east on I-90 when he changed lanes and struck an eastbound 2008 Buick driven by Gail Yvonne Rentz, 58, of Spearfish.
The van went into the median and rolled. The Buick spun to the south-side ditch, where it rolled. There were five passengers in the van. Kristian Sateren, 46, of Sturgis, was thrown from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver and the other passengers, Mark Cline, 46; Raphael Washington, 49; Samuel Lewis, 57; and Burns Landrum, 46, all of Rapid City, sustained serious injuries. The men were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Rentz suffered minor injuries and was also taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 90 were shut down for an about an hour as officials investigated the accident. No charges have been filed.
The Sioux Falls accident attorneys at Zimmer, Duncan, and Cole, LLP offer our condolences to the family of Mr. Sateren. We’d also like to offer our well-wishes to all those who were injured in the crash.
