This week, the South Dakota Safety Council joined with the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, federal and local highway safety, law enforcement, and numerous motorcycle organizations to proclaim May Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
For this month and throughout the summer, drivers are urged to share the road with motorcyclists and be on extra alert to keep motorcyclists safe. For their part, motorcycle riders are being urged to make themselves visible to drivers and follow other safety guidelines.
Rick Kiley, Director of the South Dakota Motorcycle Rider Education Program, noted that the improved weather will bring an increasing amount of motorcyclists to the roads. This means that everyone else needs to pay attention to those riding motorcycles. "A motorcycle is one of the smallest vehicles on our roads, often hidden in another vehicle's blind spot. Everyone needs to aggressively look for them," said Kiley.
However, it isn't just drivers of cars who need to be vigilant. According to Kiley, motorcyclists need to take care as well: "They should follow the rules of the road, be alert to other drivers, never ride while impaired or distracted and always wear a Department of Transportation-compliant helmet and other protective gear."
We applaud the extra attention paid to motorcycle safety this month, and hope it has a positive impact in preventing South Dakota motorcycle accidents on area roads throughout the summer.
