A South Dakota State Patrol Trooper was hit and injured on Interstate 29 south of the Brooking exit. The accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011.
The trooper was helping a car that had slid off into the median when a northbound Chevy Blazer hit the back of the patrol car at nearly 70 miles per hour. The Blazer then slid into the car it was trying to pass, also knocking it off the road.
The trooper, who was in the patrol car at the time of the accident, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. He was released from the hospital the same evening.
The driver of the Blazer was not seriously injured in the crash. However, the individual was ticketed for overdriving, considering the ice and blowing snow on Interstate 29 at the time.
This is the thirteenth trooper hit on South Dakota roads this winter. Our thoughts are with all of those involved in this unfortunate accident.
