A fatal motorcycle accident that occurred on Sunday, September 11, 2011, in South Dakota, took the life of Joshua Michael Gillen of Northfield, Minnesota. Gillen, who was 36 years of age, died when his 1995 Harley Davidson motorcycle collided head-on with a car near Summit on the U.S. Highway 12 overpass on Interstate 29.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Gillen was heading eastbound on U.S. Highway 12 when a 2005 Buick LeSabre, driven by Willis Kruse, left I-29 at the Summit exit and turned left onto U.S. Highway 12. Kruse, who is 76 years of age and from Columbia, South Dakota, was traveling west in the eastbound lane. Gillen's motorcycle crashed directly into the Buick LeSabre and Gillen was thrown from the motorcycle. Although he was wearing a helmet during the accident, Gillen died at the scene.
Darlys Ann Kruse, 73 years of age, was a passenger in the motor vehicle during the crash; both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. They were taken to a Webster Hospital with minor injuries.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joshua Michael Gillen, who were impacted by this tragic accident. We wish them much strength during this difficult time.
