A newly-emerged sinkhole that enveloped a Lyman County highway claimed two cars last week, and with them the lives of two South Dakota women.
The sinkhole was caused by heavy spring rains that weakened and ran over the highway. Two vehicles attempted to cross the flooded portion, not knowing that the road beneath the water had washed away.
A 56-year-old woman was found dead inside her van. The body of a 61-year-old woman from Lower Brule was found nearly four miles downstream of the highway.
Lyman County Sheriff Steve Manger said, "This is the first time I've ever seen anything like this before. It's just amazing the force of mother nature. It's just a sad, very sad deal."
Sad, indeed. Our sympathies go out to the families of the deceased, and we again remind our readers of the danger of spring and summer flooding.
