On Thursday, February 2, 2012, a tragic motor vehicle crash occurred in Campbell County, approximately six miles east of Herreid, in north central South Dakota. Randall Lee Rueb, 53, of Herreid, was driving a 1990 Chevrolet CC 109 northbound on 312th Avenue and failed to stop at the intersection of 108th Street and 312th Avenue. While Rued continued through the intersection, a 2011 Ford F-150 truck, driven by Richard Beitelspacher, 67, of Bowdle, South Dakota, was traveling westbound towards the intersection. The Chevrolet CC 109 and the Ford F-150 crashed into one another at the intersection and both motor vehicles caught fire.
Emergency personnel were called and, sadly, determined that Rueb had died at the scene of the crash. Beitelspacher was taken to a Mobridge hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
At this time it is not known whether both drivers were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the fatal motor vehicle accident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Randall Lee Rueb, who were impacted by this tragic motor vehicle wreck. We also send our thoughts to Richard Beitelspacher as he recovers from the crash.
