A woman from Mitchell, South Dakota, was killed on Sunday, March 31, 2013, when her motor vehicle crashed into another vehicle in Jones County. Despite assistance from emergency medical personnel, the woman died at the scene.
According to reports, Terri Ann Kowall, 54, was driving north on U.S. Highway 83, south of Murdo, South Dakota, when she lost control of her 2011 Jeep Compass near mile marker 58 and crossed the centerline of the highway. At the same time, Ian Matthew Moriarty, 28, of Rapid City, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 83 in a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup truck. Moriarity swerved into the right shoulder of U.S. Highway 83 when he saw Kowall driving towards him, but he was unable to avoid a collision. Despite his best efforts, Kowall crashed directly into the pickup truck.
Kowall was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, but died at the scene of the crash. Moriarity, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a Rapid City Hospital.
The investigation into the motor vehicle crash is ongoing.
