Woman Killed by Teen Driver near Edgemont, Teen Arrested for DUI

Posted on Jul 07, 2012

A deadly motor vehicle crash occurred on the east edge of Dewey Road near Edgemont, South Dakota, on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 10:00 p.m. that evening when a car had stopped to switch drivers.

Kyle Thomas Stokes, 18, of Edgemont, was driving a 2007 Dodge Dakota on Dewey Road when he hit a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo, driven by Elizabeth Jean Humiston, 20, also of Edgemont. Jayme Shawn Manke, 20, of Edgemont, was a front seat passenger in the Aveo at the time of the accident. Laura Rose Corbett, 19, of Edgemont, was a backseat passenger in the Aveo.

According to police, Stokes ran into the Aveo when it was stopped on the road. Manke was sliding across the front seat to the driver’s side while Humiston was walking around the car to the other side. Both the Dakota and the Aveo slid into the east ditch on the road.

Paramedics arrived and Manke was transported to a hospital in Hot Springs. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. Humiston was not injured and Corbett had only minor injuries as a result of the crash.

Breanna Kaye Pulley, 18, of Edgemont, was a passenger in the Dakota. She was wearing her seat belt and was not injured in the crash.

Stokes was arrested at the scene of the accident on the suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Stokes was not wearing his seat belt and had minor injuries from the motor vehicle crash.

The accident is still under investigation and, according to Fall River County State Attorney Jim Sword, additional charges against Stokes will be determined once the investigation is concluded.

We extend our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Jayme Shawn Manke, who were impacted by this tragic accident.
